Doxycycline can be prescribed to treat infections caused by bacteria. The combination of this medicine with other drugs can be recommended for some amoeba infections. Doxycycline can cause birth defects in unborn babies if taken by pregnant women (permanent teeth discoloration). This drug has been reported to make birth control pills less effective. To avoid getting pregnant while taking this drug, make sure you use a reliable non-hormonal method of birth control. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to similar drugs, such as tetracycline, demeclocycline, or minocycline. Doxycycline can increase your skin sensitivity. Make sure you wear some protective clothing and apply sunscreen with SPF of minimum 15.
Do not stop taking doxycycline until you use the entire amount prescribed by your doctor. Doing so can cause a relapse of the infection. Using this medicine for the treatment of children younger than 8 can cause permanent yellowing or graying of the teeth. If you are taking any of the following drugs tell your doctor about that: isotretinoin, tretinoin, antacid, drugs containing bismuth subsalicylate, minerals (iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium), blood thinners, penicillin antibiotics, cholesterol-lowering medications and over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements.
